DAVIE, Fla., Dec. 16 -- Coach Jimmy Johnson of the Miami Dolphins indefinitely suspended Cecil Collins Thursday after the rookie running back was arrested by police in Davie, Fla., near the site of the team's traning facility, on burglary charges.
His arrest, first reported by WSVN-TV in Miami, occurred around 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning after he allegedly broke into the home of a neighboring couple in his apartment complex through a window.
$?'The couple was sleeping when Collins entered their bedroom,' Capt. Ed Taylor of the Davie Police Dept., told the station.$?'They woke up and confronted him, and then the husband chased him from one room to another and he exited by jumping out a window, the same window he entered the residence and fled. Basically, they were awakened by an intruder.'
The husband, identified as Ronald Nolte, confronted Collins in the back of the building and, when he asked him what he was doing in their apartment, Collins claimed it wasn't him.
Collins was being held in the Broward County (Fla.) Jail on $10,000 bond.He was charged with two counts of burglary, and may also face one of stalking as well. The police report on the incident said he had been following the woman, indentified as Tina Nolte.
$?'The woman was very upset,' Jim Lewis, her attorney, told the station.$?'Apparently he has been following the woman for some time trying to make her acquaintance and it ended with him breaking into her residence,' Taylor said.
Johnson issued a statement about the incident.
$?'I am very disappointed in Cecil's actions,' Johnson said.$?'We don't know all the details yet and I hope these allegations aren't true. However, he will be suspended until we find out more information.'
Collins, a fifth-round pick by the Dolphins in this year's draft, had a criminal history while in college that led many teams to shy away from him. Some Dolphin insiders were also skeptical, but Johnson decided to give him a chance and signed him to a three-year deal worth nearly $900, 000 with a signing bonus of $110,000.
He was arrested two times in Louisiana in 1998 for illegally entering the apartments of two women living with his apartment complex in Baton Rouge. In that state, he is still on probation.
He was also expelled from McNeese State last year after failing a court-ordered drug test. His college career began at LSU but he was kicked out of school there as well.
$?'He has been undergoing regular counseling since he joined the Dolphins and I though he was making progress,' Johnson said.$?'I want to make it clear that the Miami Dolphin organization in no way condones the behavior that was reported to us. Until we get all the facts, it would be premature to speculate on what further action might be taken.'
Collins has been sidelined since Oct. 14, when he suffered a leg fracture in the game against Buffalo. In eight games, he had 131 carries for 414 yards and two touchdowns.
