WASHINGTON, Aug. 19 -- James J. 'Whitey' Bulger, a former Alcatraz inmate who is allegedly the long-time head of Boston's Irish mob, has been placed on the FBI's '10 Most Wanted Fugitives' list. Believed to be accompanied by Catherine Elizabeth Greig, the 69-year- old, silver-haired Bulger is known to have traveled extensively to countries that include Italy, Ireland and Canada. The FBI has posted a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to his arrest. Greig is wanted on a charge of harboring a fugitive. Bulger was born on Sept. 3, 1929 in Boston. He is white, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds and has blue eyes and white hair. He has used a number of aliases, including Jimmy-Boy Bulger, Jimmy Blue Eyes, Whitey, Thomas Baxter, Tom Marshall and Tom Harris. Agents say he also has a violent temper and carries a knife. Bulger has been charged in Boston with violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, better known as RICO. The FBI says Bulger has funded his Boston operations through the extortion of others' criminal activities, including gambling, loan- sharking and drug sales, using violence and the threat of violence to maintain his position. Until he ducked out of sight in 1995, Bulger was the long-time head of Boston's Irish mob. He gained mob prominence, the FBI says, after doing time in Alcatraz for bank robbery. He became chieftain of Boston's Winter Hill Gang, after its leader, Howard 'Howie' Winter went to prison for fixing horse races at Suffolk Downs.
The FBI says Bulger ran his crime organization from South Boston for 30 years. Greig, 48, is white, 5 feet 6 inches tall, between 130 and 150 pounds, has a thin build, blonde hair and blue eyes. She has also used the name Helen Marshall and the Social Security number 030-40-5309. She is believed to be a dental hygienist and 'has a strong affection for dogs,' the FBI says. The FBI says anyone with information on Bulger should contact the nearest FBI office or call the toll-free number, 1-888-564-8434. The bureau said all contacts will be handled in the strictest confidence. ---
