Klebolds write to victims' families

LITTLETON, Colo., June 3 -- The families of Columbine High School shooting victims have received letters from Dylan Klebold's parents expressing sorrow over the deadly rampage staged by their son and Eric Harris. The parents of Cassie Bernall, who was shot dead at point blank range after she told a gunman 'Yes, I believe in God,' said they were glad to have received the letter.

But Tom Mauser, the father of 15-year-old Daniel Mauser, says he and his wife are disappointed that the Klebolds didn't hold themselves accountable, though the Mausers 'appreciate the thought.' Linda Mauser tells The Denver Post today, 'From the Klebolds' letter I don't get any sense that they were pro-active with how they dealt with their child.' On April 20, Klebold and Harris shot and killed 12 classmates and a teacher at Columbine before killing themselves. Another 23 students were wounded, four of whom are undergoing rehabilitation. Michael Shoels, the father of Isaiah Shoels -- the only black victim -- says he has not received a letter. He suspects that the letter was sent to his old address, or that his $250 million lawsuit against the Klebolds knocked him off the couple's mailing list. The Klebolds' lawyer said through a spokeswoman that the letter was 'private and personal' and would not comment. The letter also raised the possibility of the Klebolds and the victims' families meeting sometime in the future. ---
