CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 8 -- The Carolina Panthers Monday signed unresticted free agent defensive back Roderick Mullen. Mullen played cornerback and safety for three seasons with the Green Bay Packers before spending all of the 1998 season on injured reserve with a dislocated shoulder.
He started one of 38 games for Green Bay and appeared in eight postseason contests. The 6-1, 202-pound Mullen was a fifth-round selection of the New York Giants in 1995 and spent that season on their practice squad. He appeared primarily in 'nickle' and 'dime' defenses and on special teams for Green Bay. Carolina also signed free agent running back Chris Hetherington and defensive back Lamar Lyons. The 6-3, 249-pound Hetherington started one of 36 games with the Indianapolis Colts over the past three seasons. Lyons, 6-3, 210 pounds, played in seven games for the Baltimore Ravens in 1998 before being waived. Baltimore signed Lyons from Oakland's practice squad midway through the 1996 season.
