College football player dies

CHARLESTON, S.C., Nov. 3 -- Charleston Southern defensive lineman Scott Wehnes has died, one day after collapsing prior to an afternoon practice. Trident Medical Center spokesperson Hunter Harmon said the 21-year- old Wehnes 'suffered an acute bleeding in the brain.'

It was not immediately clear what caused the bleeding. Wehnes was admitted to the medical center Monday at 3:00 p.m. and spent the night in critical condition in the intensive care unit. He died early today. A 6-foot-2, 265-pound junior from Rockford, Illinois, Wehnes joined the Division 1-AA Buccaneers after a season at Rock Valley Junior College in his hometown. He had 11 tackles and a sack in eight games this season. At Washington High School, he was a three-time All- Conference selection. 'This is a tragic loss of a fine young man,' said Charleston Southern President Jairy Hunter. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott's family.' Wehnes is survived by his parents, Arland and Kathy, and his sister, Lisa. Wehnes is the second Buccaneers' football player to die this year. Freshman running back Kevin Keyes was shot to death in February when he was carjacked as he returned to campus. Charleston Southern's home game Saturday against Morehead State will be dedicated to Wehnes. The school will hold a memorial service for him on Wednesday. ---
