Tennessee Jamal Lewis out for season

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 5 -- Fifth-ranked Tennessee saw its national title hopes take a serious blow Monday when it learned that tailback Jamal Lewis will miss the rest of the season with a severe leg injury.

Ranked 12th in the nation in rushing, Lewis suffered a torn ligament in his right knee in Saturday's 17-9 victory at Auburn. The win enabled the Volunteers to improve to 5-0. Lewis, a sophomore, gained 497 yards and scored three touchdowns on 73 carries -- a 6.8-yard average. He rushed 18 times for 140 yards in the win over Auburn, moving into 10th place on the school's all-time list with 1,861 yards. The Volunteers travel to Athens, Ga., on Saturday to battle 12th- ranked and equally unbeaten Georgia.
