NEW YORK, Sept. 4 -- NBA star Patrick Ewing's estranged wife is writing a tell-all book about the National Basketball Association. Mirabella reports that Rita Ewing has joined forces with Seattle Supersonic player Greg Anthony's spouse Crystal McCrary to pen 'Homecourt Advantage.'
The novel about a basketballer's wife deciding whether to leave her man is reminiscent of the Ewings' soured relationship. Ewing tells the monthly magazine the NBA handed out condoms to players' wives after Magic Johnson announced he had AIDS. She adds that the hoopsters also were warned to throw out used condoms themselves to prevent paternity suits, because some female fans may save the condoms and then bring the sperm to doctors to be inseminated. Rita says, 'One of Patrick's teammates told me years ago that 95 percent of the guys in the league cheat.' She adds that 75 percent of the NBA players' significant others are themselves sleeping around. And Patrick was one of them. He fathered an illegitimate child while he was going out with Rita and is rumored to have had an affair with Knicks City Dancer Heather Errico after he and Rita were married. Interestingly, so did the 'Homecourt Advantage' protagonist's husband. Other similarities between the book and real life includes clothes-obsessed coach who seems like ex-Knicks boss Pat Riley and a shark of a sports agent who sounds like Patrick's representative David Falk. However, Rita, who has been married to the Knicks giant for eight and half years, says the fictitious NBA wife is not based on her. 'Homecourt Advantage,' published by Avon, comes out next month. ---
