Hull praises Hitler in interview

TORONTO, Aug. 26 -- Former Chicago Blackhawk and Winnipeg Jets star Bobby Hull is quoted in a Russian newspaper interview as saying Hitler had some 'good ideas' but just went a 'bit too far.' The Toronto Sun reported today Hull also said the black population of the United States is growing too fast and genetic breeding is a worthy idea.

The Sun said the interview was given last week to the Moscow Times, an English-language daily. When asked if his remarks make him a racist, Hull reportedly responded, 'I don't give a damn. I'm not running for any political office.' Hull said Hitler's plan to create a master race had merit. 'Hitler, for example, had some good ideas. He just went a little bit too far.' He was also critical of the Canadian government, calling it too socialist and too quick to give money to lazy people. Hull had negative remarks about his son, Brett, who recently signed with the Dallas Stars. He said Brett might not be 'as strong mentally as I was and can't always follow through on his decisions.' Hull is in Russia as part of the annual Spartak summer hockey tournament, which this year honored Vyacheslav Fetisov, the Russian hockey star who recently retired from the Detroit Red Wings. The story appeared next to a picture of Hull and Russian hockey legend Alexander Yakushev holding a bottle of vodka. Hull said if he had to do anything in life over again, 'Maybe I'd drink a bit more.' During his 16-year National Hockey League career, Hull, nicknamed 'The Golden Jet,' scored 610 goals and twice was named most valuable player. ---
