Kim Basinger wins Oscar

LOS ANGELES, March 23 -- Actress Kim Basinger nabbed the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role as a sexpot in the 1950s police drama 'L.A. Confidential.' Basinger beat out Joan Cusack, Minnie Driver, Julianne Moore and sentimental favorite Gloria Stuart of 'Titanic,' who would have been the oldest Oscar winner ever.

In a jubilant speech, Basinger said she wanted to thank 'everyone I've ever met.' She singled out her father, explaining he was her first acting teacher and spent hours with her watching old movies from the 1930s, '40s and '50s. Basinger told reporters the honor hadn't yet sunk in. Holding her Oscar aloft, she said, 'Maybe this will fall on my head tomorrow, I don't know.' She had already won Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for her role in the much-acclaimed movie. The award was the first presented at the 70th annual Academy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. ---
