UCLA 74, Illinois 69

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 30 -- J.R. Henderson scored 22 points and hit a couple of key free throws in the final minute Tuesday to lead UCLA to a 74-69 victory over Illinois. The Bruins held the Illini without a point over the final 2 minutes 30 seconds to pull out the victory, their ninth in a row after a season- opening loss to North Carolina.

Jelani McCoy made his return for the Bruins and scored seven points in 14 minutes off the bench. He was suspended Sept. 29 for violating unspecified team rules. UCLA held a 50-33 lead with 14:20 remaining, but the Illini made a huge comeback. Illinois used a 14-5 run over the next four minutes to pull within 55-47, and an 11-2 run tied the game at 61 with just under 6 minutes left. Baron Davis made two free throws to give UCLA the lead just nine seconds later and the teams went nearly two minutes without a point. Davis committed a foul with 23 seconds to play, but the Illini were not in the bonus. Turner then missed a three-pointer after the inbounds pass and Henderson grabbed the rebound. Henderson canned both free throws for a 72-69 lead, and after another Illinois miss, Davis sealed it with two more from the stripe. Toby Bailey added 18 points for UCLA, while Davis scored 12 and dished out six assists. Awvee Storey scored 11 points for the Illini, who fell to 8-5. Storey made all five of his field goals off the bench.
