BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 11 -- The parents of slain beauty princess JonBenet Ramsey are mailing copies of the ransom note in the case to Boulderites. H. Ellis Armistead, a Denver private investigator hired by John and Patsy Ramsey, sent residents the 2 -page note accompanied by a letter asking for the public's help. But a former Denver prosecutor now in private practice says the letter and other moves the Ramseys have made involving the media are part of their lawyers' strategy.
Craig Silverman tells UPI, 'They're setting up a beautiful defense. As a lawyer I believe you have to set up a good defense. That's their job as lawyers. Meanwhile they have a spin machine like I've never seen. ' The Ramseys, citing frustration with police, earlier this summer began running weekly ads in the Sunday Boulder Daily Camera in hopes of getting new leads and to publicize their own investigators' findings. Last week John Ramsey sent a letter to the editor of the Boulder paper, and Patsy Ramsey phoned CNN's Larry King Live to lash out at a tabloid editor. She also appeared on the syndicated television show, 'American Journal.' And Wednesday night ABC's Primetime Live aired an interview with the Ramseys' friend and lawyer, Mike Bynum, and gave viewers a videotaped tour of the 15-room Tudor where JonBenet's body was found Dec. 26. Silverman says the Ramseys' use of the media is designed to influence the people of Boulder, some of whom would serve on a jury should there be a trial in which the defense would introduce the letters, ads and interviews as exhibits. ---
