U.N.: Situation with Pol Pot unclear

UNITED NATIONS, June 24 -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan says he has informed the United Nations of the Cambodian government's request to try Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot, who is held responsible for the deaths of more than a million Cambodians. Annan says the request to bring those responsible for the massacre to justice gave no information about the whereabouts of Pol Pot.

He says he is seeking more information. He says the Cambodian request is brought to the attention of the U.N. General Assembly and the U.N. Security Council 'for any action which may be deemed appropriate.' Pol Pot ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 and applied drastic communist measures that killed many of his compatriots through detention and forced labor. Pol Pot is believed captured by his former supporters and held in a jungle hideout. The United States has asked Canada to demand his extradition for trial in a court possibly to set up by the United Nations. ---
