CONCORD, Calif., June 12 -- The father of a high school girl killed when a Waterworld USA water slide collapsed has filed a wrongful death claim against the city of Concord, Calif. The father of 18-year-old Quimby Ghilotti, who died June 2 after a crowded slide snapped during a graduation trip, accuses Concord officials of allowing a 'defective, dangerous and broken' ride.
Ghilotti would have been among the students at Napa High School graduating today. She was among the students who apparently were trying to set a record by getting the maximum number of students on the ride at the same time. Thirty-two students were injured when they fell 40 feet onto the ground from the Banzai Pipeline. Larry Ghilotti's claim is a precursor to a civil suit if the city does not settle the claim during the next 45 days. Waterworld has not yet been named a defendant. Waterworld officials have called the accident 'a silly prank that went bad,' noting that signs warn visitors that the slides are designed to hold one rider at a time. ---
