Kirkland, Wash., boy wins geography bee

WASHINGTON, May 28 -- Singapore is a lucky place for a junior high school student from Kirkland, Wash.

Alex Kerchner grabbed the National Geography Bee championship and a $25,000 college scholarship when he answered this question: What is Asia's most densely populated country with a population of 3 million, in an area of less than 250 square miles? The 12-year-old's response: Singapore. Kerchner was among more than 50 students who competed in the annual contest, which is sponsored by the National Geographic magazine. Steve Sreckovic, 14, of South Milwaukee, Wis., was the second-place winner of a $15,000 scholarship, and Justin Mosel, 14, of Orchard, Neb., placed third and received a $10,000 scholarship. ---
