GRANBURY, Texas, May 24 -- The mother of a young girl kidnapped, sexually assaulted and slain is under arrest on suspicion she allowed the attack to occur. Hood County authorities say Schwana Patterson remains jailed today on $200,000 bond on two counts of injury to a child by omission.
A jailer told United Press International he would not let Patterson come to a telephone to talk about her case or return a telephone call. But friends and acquaintances describe Patterson as a dedicated mother who worked two jobs to support her family and was constantly in the company of her children during her free time. Authorities believe Patterson knew former boyfriend Bobby Woods was attacking the children, 11-year-old Sarah and 9-year-old Cody. Hood County District Attorney Richard Hattox said statements from the boy, who remains hospitalized with a skull fracture, were key to building the case against his mother. A criminal complaint says she told Cody she knew about Woods' attack but was afraid to intervene. Patterson initially said she slept through the predawn incident. Cody fought Woods when his sister's screams awoke him at their Thorp Spring home, southwest of Dallas, on April 30. All three went through a window during the fight and Woods took them in a car to a cemetery, where he severely beat Cody. He awoke hours later, dazed and covered with fire ants. A passing farmer on horseback found him and carried him to authorities. A few days later, Sarah's body was found with her throat slashed. She had been sexually assaulted. She was buried on her 12th birthday. Woods remains jailed on $1 million bond and faces capital murder charges. ---
