KIEV, Ukraine, May 24 -- McDonald's has opened its first restaurant in the Ukrainian capital Kiev ('KEY-ef').
Company officials say McDonald's is investing $100 million in Ukraine and will open seven outlets this year. The first restaurant took 99 days to build. Ukraine, with a population of 51 million, is the second-largest market in the region after Russia. McDonald's says the second branch will open in a month in Kharkov ('HAR-kawf') in eastern Ukraine. Company officials say McDonald's plans to have as many as 85 outlets in the former Soviet republic by 2000. It has operated in Russia since 1990. ---
