Joey Meyer out as DePaul coach

CHICAGO, April 28 -- Joey Meyer resigned Monday as head men's basketball coach at DePaul University, ending a 55-year family dynasty at the school. No replacement was immediately announced.

Meyer had been the head coach at DePaul for the past 13 years but has not qualified for the NCAA Tournament since 1992. The Blue Demons had a dismal 3-25 record last season, the worst in the school's 74-year history. Meyer replaced his legendary father, Ray Meyer, as coach following the 1983-84 season. The elder Meyer coached at DePaul for 42 years beginning in 1941. The horrendous 1996-97 season followed an 11-18 campaign, DePaul's first losing season since 1971. Joey Meyer had been involved with the DePaul program for the last 30 years as either a player, assistant coach or head coach. Joey Meyer compiled a career record of 231-158 in 13 years at DePaul, a winning percentage of .594. Ray Meyer's era produced a 724-354 record, a winning percentage of .671. Joey Meyer served as an assistant under his father from 1973 to 1984. Joey Meyer led DePaul to 10 postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournaments and three NIT's.
