EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., April 19 -- Raul Diaz Arce and Jaime Moreno scored early goals and D.C. United held on Saturday night to post a 2-1 victory over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. United decided the game in the first 10 minutes as Diaz Arce and Moreno played a pass-and-shoot game to chalk up a quick pair of scores.
Diaz Arce, the Salvadoran striker, did the honors in the fourth minute by scoring his fifth goal of the year with assists going to Moreno and Richie Williams. Moreno, a Bolivian national, found the net for the third time this season, beating MetroStars keeper Tony Meola on a feed from Diaz Arce and fellow Bolivian Marco Etcheverry. The MetroStars fought back, with Giovanni Savarese finding the net just before halftime. The 45th-minute marker came with assists to Miles Joseph and Antony De Avila. While D.C. controlled the pace early, the MetroStars gave the 26,322 fans a show, pressing the issue right down to the final whistle. D.C. keeper Scott Garlick continued his stellar play by ending a pair of last-minute MetroStars' scoring chances with stops on corner kicks. Four players who would have participated in this game were called to action for the United States National Team, which faces Mexico in a regional World Cup qualifier Sunday at Foxboro, Massachusetts. The players included United and U.S. captain John Harkes, D.C. defenders Jeff Agoos and Eddie Pope and MetroStars midfielder Mike Sorber.
