Scientific-Atlanta buys Arcodan

ATLANTA, Feb. 19 -- Scientific-Atlanta Inc. Wednesday signed an agreement to purchase Arcodan A/S, a prominent Danish manufacturer of headend systems, opto-electronics, and RF distribution equipment. Terms of deal, which is expected to be completed by Feb. 28, were not disclosed.

Arcodan, which employs 270, serves hundreds of customers such as cable operators, installers and systems integrators throughout Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Development and manufacturing takes place at its facility in Sonderborg, Denmark. Its products are distributed through its subsidiaries in Germany and Poland; a partly owned subsidiary in France; and through a distribution network in Europe. 'We look forward to joining with Arcodan to provide cable operators with the cost-effective infrastructure necessary to serve an increasing number of subscribers in Europe and around the globe,' said John Buckett, president of Scientific-Atlanta's European sales. Peter Rathje, managing director of Arcodan said 'backed by Scientific-Atlanta, Arcodan intends to embark on a new phase of expanded research and development, new products, larger production volumes and market expansion.' Scientific-Atlanta currently has three subsidiaries with operations in Europe: sales and service facilities in the United Kingdom and Italy, and an opto-electronics research and development laboratory in the U.K.
