Spurs' Elliott to undergo knee surgery

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 12 -- The San Antonio Spurs' injury woes continued Wednesday when it was determined that starting forward Sean Elliott will undergo surgery early next week on his right knee and require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation. Elliott, who has missed the last three games, including Wednesday night's 106-101 loss to Vancouver, will have the surgery to correct chronic tendinitis in his right quadriceps.

It will be performed in San Antonio by Spurs team Dr. David Schmidt on an outpatient basis. 'Sean is a guy who is key,' said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. 'It is a killer for us. It is a testament to him that he has played this long with the pain. It shows that he will do anything to help this group.' The 29-year-old Elliott, who has played all but one of his eight years in the league with San Antonio, is averaging 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 39 games this season. Star center David Robinson has played just four games all season with a back injury and a broken foot, sixth man and long-range shooting specialist Chuck Person has yet to play this season following off-season back surgery and big man Charles Smith has played just four games as well because of a knee injury.
