Peruvian president arrives in Manila

MANILA, Nov. 14 -- Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori arrived in the Philippines Thursday on the second leg of a four-country Asian mission to promote trade and convince businessmen to invest in the Latin American nation. Fujimori's tour also aims to seek support for Peru's bid to join the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, a regional trade group of 18 economies that is set to meet in the Philippines from Nov. 20 to 25.

Fujimori has been scheduled to meet President Fidel Ramos on Friday to discuss how to enhance bilateral economic ties. The two leaders are set to forge an agreement for the establishment of a Peruvian Business Council in the Philippines aimed at encouraging and protecting trade and investments in the Latin American nation. Fujimori is slated to address a business forum and receive an honorary doctorate degree from the University of the Philippines in Los Banos, Laguna province, 40 miles (64 km) south of Manila. He has been scheduled to visit the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, a former U.S. naval base transformed into an industrial zone, 50 miles north of Manila.
