Zaun assigned to Marlins to complete deal

MIAMI, Aug. 23 -- Baltimore Orioles catcher Gregg Zaun was claimed off waivers Friday and assigned to the Florida Marlins as the unmaned player in Wednesday's trade. The 25-year-old Zaun appeared in 39 games with Baltimore this year, batting .231 with one home run and 13 RBI before being optioned to Rochester of the International League (AAA) on Aug. 6.

He was hitting . 319 in 14 games with the Red Wings. Baltimore acquired reliever Terry Mathews from Florida for a player to be named later Wednesday. The Orioles have won 16 of their last 23 games to draw within five games of the first-place New York Yankees in the American League Eastern Division. They are also one-half game behind the Chicago White Sox for the wild card spot.
