Hoops' Anthony Mason arrested in NYC

NEW YORK, July 24 -- Charlotte Hornets basketball star Anthony Mason was arrested early Wednesday in the Times Square area of New York City on charges of assault, menacing and resisting arrest, New York City police said. The former 'bad boy' of the New York Knicks was in a loud dispute with others about 3 a.m. at 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue, police spokeswoman Officer Sonya Oquendo said.

When several police tried to calm the situation, Mason attacked them, three of whom suffered minor injuries. Mason was handcuffed and taken to the Midtown South precinct headquarters where he was booked on charges of assault, menacing and resisting arrest, the spokeswoman said. The 29-year-old Mason is no stranger to the inside of police stationhouses in New York City, having been arrested at least twice previously for allegedly attacking a woman in a nightclub and for a dispute involving his car. The 6-foot-7-inch Mason, a graduate of Tennessee State, was signed as a free agent by the Knicks July 30, 1991, and recently traded to the Hornets.
