TORONTO, Jan. 31 -- St. Louis Blues center Dale Hawerchuk became the fourth player this season and the 23rd in NHL history Wednesday night to score 500 goals in a 4-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. With 9:30 left in the game, Hawerchuk took a cross-ice pass from Rob Pearson and lifted a shot over goaltender Felix Potvin for his 11th goal this season.
Hawerchuk joins Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux, Mark Messier of the New York Rangers and Detroit's Steve Yzerman, all of whom also accomplished the feat this season. He also ties longtime Maple Leaf Lanny MacDonald, who finished his career with 500 goals, for 22nd on the all-time goal- scoring list. Hawerchuk spent nine seasons with the Winnipeg Jets and five with the Buffalo Sabres before joining the Blues this season. His best season was the 1985-86 campaign when he had 53 goals and 77 assists. Unlike Lemieux, Messier and Yzerman, Hawerchuk has never played in the Stanley Cup Finals. 'It was a great feeling,' said Hawerchuk. 'The only thing left for me to do in my career is to win a Cup.'
