EL BIREH, West Bank, Jan. 22 -- The following are the partial results of the first Palestinian elections held on Jan. 20 in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as supplied by the Palestinian Central Election Commission. Results are for the balloting for president of the Palestinian Authority andfor members of the 88-member Palestinian Council. Voters chose the candidates from 16 electoral districts in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Presidency candidates: Yasser Arafat, Samiha Khalil. Popular vote: Arafat (88.1 percent), Khalil (9.3 percent) (spoiled ballots 2.6 percent) Presidential vote -- partial results by district: In the West Bank: Bethlehem: Arafat 32,080 (89.6 percent), Khalil 3,721 (10.4 percent); Jericho: Arafat 9,334 (93.3 percent), Khalil 666 (6.7 percent); Tubas: Arafat 10,613 (88.8 percent), Khalil 1,330 (11.2 percent); Tulkarem: Arafat 35,018 (87.5 percent), Khalil 4,999 (12.5 percent); Election for the 88-member Palestinian Council: Total number of candidates: 672. Da'oud and Abu'Aitah won the two slots with 5,916 and 5,916 votes, respectively, and Azeh was denied a seat on the council.

In Jerusalem, Emil Jargou'i finished 10th overall, but was given the 7th position from the town, as two seats were reserved for Christians. In Bethlehem, Fatah Party candidate Issa Muhammed Abbas Azeh received 9,153 ballots and finished third in overall voting. However, two seats from the town were reserved for Christians. Da'oud and Abu'Aitah won the two slots with 5,916 and 5,916 votes, respectively, and Azeh was denied a seat on the council. In Nablus, Salom Al-Kahen received 2,430 ballots and finished 11th in overall voting, but was given the 8th town seat, which was reserved for Samaritans.
