Philippine massacre kills 11

MANILA, Dec. 29 -- Unidentified gunmen opened fire on several homes in a remote village in an eastern Philippine province, killing 11 people and seriously injuring another person, police said Friday.

Officials said the Thursday night massacre in Buhi town in Camarines Sur, 190 miles (304 km) southeast of Manila, could have been triggered by a land dispute involving three families. Provincial Gov. Luis Villafuerte quoted witnesses who said they saw four men fire at the houses of the Gayte and Campo families. Members of both families, including a 6-year-old girl and an infant, as well as others in the neighborhood were killed in the shooting. The National Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into the case.
