Batman Forever' video sells 3 million

BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 8 -- Warner Bros. announced Thursday it has sold 3 million copies of the 'Batman Forever' home video in its first week of release. The studio, a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc., said the title will probably top the sales of the original 'Batman' video, which is the studio's top seller with a reported 10 million copies after shipping 13. 5 million.

'Batman Returns,' the second film in the series, sold a reported 4.6 million video copies. 'Batman Forever,' starring Val Kilmer, was released on Halloween with a suggested retail price of $19.96. It topped $180 million at the domestic box office this summer and is the year's top grosser so far. 'Sales are running significantly ahead of expectations, and 'Batman Forever' will likely be Warner Home Video's biggest sell-through title ever,' said Jim Cardwell, executive vice president for North America for the studio's home video arm. Warner said reorders have been heavy from major retailers and sales are expected to be sustained through the upcoming holiday season with television advertising support from promotional partners Fujifilm, Acclaim and MGM in addition to Warner's own network advertising campaign. The unusual disclosure from Warner, which usually does not reveal sales and shipment figures for home videos, means that 'Batman Forever' is likely to compete with Disney's 'The Santa Clause' as the fourth quarter's top live-action video. Disney's re-release of animated 'Cinderella' will be the top video seller during the quarter. The studio said it topped 7 million copies sold in its first three weeks of release last month and the studio is reported to have shipped 15 million copies.
