Spurs sign Cory Alexander

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 5 -- The San Antonio Spurs signed guard Cory Alexander, their first round pick in the June NBA draft to a contract Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 6-1, 185-pound Alexander was the 29th overall selection and will likely serve as the team's third point guard behind Avery Johnson and Doc Rivers. Alexander played three seasons at Virginia, appearing in a total of 85 games. He averaged 15.1 points and 4.7 assists in his college career. 'Cory Alexander possesses abilities at both ends of the court,' said Spurs general manager Gregg Popovich. 'He has the potential to be a real leader and he embodies the confidence and character we always look for.' Alexander played in 20 games before having his 1994-95 season cut short when he suffered a broken right ankle in a Feb. 8 game at North Carolina State. He averaged 16.6 points, 5.5 assists and 1.6 steals in 34.6 minutes last season. Alexander was red-shirted during the 1993-94 season after he broke his right ankle in the opening game against Connecticut. He enjoyed his best season as a sophomore when he averaged 18.8 points and 4.6 assists in 31 games.
