Jim McMahon signs with Browns

CLEVELAND, Oct. 5 -- The Cleveland Browns re-signed veteran quarterback Jim McMahon Thursday. McMahon was originally signed by the Browns in training camp as veteran insurance for starter Vinny Testaverde, but was waived before the team made their final cuts.

McMahon, the quarterback with the highest winning percentage in league history, is a 13-year veteran who spent 1994 as a backup for the Arizona Cardinals. He is 66-30 in 96 career starts. The 36-year-old McMahon began his career with the Chicago Bears in 1982 and led them to their only Super Bowl victory following the 1985 season. He has also played for San Diego, Philadelphia and Minnesota. McMahon, a rough-and-tumble player who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, has completed 58 percent of his passes for 18,102 yards and 99 touchdowns with 87 interceptions. He has also rushed for 1, 632 yards and 16 scores. The Browns also listed All-Pro safety Eric Turner as doubtful for Sunday's game against Detroit due to a sprained knee suffered in Monday's loss to Buffalo.
