Michigan woman, 108, dies

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 7 -- One of Michigan's oldest women has died at age 108. Officials at Providence Hospital in Southfield confirmed Monday that Mary Jane Hopkins died Aug. 4 from complications related to a fall.

'She was quite active, quite a speaker, quite alert,' said Marge Cyars, a spokeswoman for the Church of God in Christ. Hopkins was supervisor of the Women's Department of the church's Northeast Michigan jurisdiction. Cyars said Hopkins 'had a very strong voice,' adding that 'she didn't smoke or drink or do any of those kinds of things.' Hopkins lived in her home on Cardoni Street in Detroit until about two months ago. She then moved into a home with an adopted daughter in Southfield. Hopkins married the late Pike Hopkins, a police officer, in Texas in 1912. They later moved to Detroit. Known as 'Mother Hopkins' to friends, she helped establish Church of God in Christ churches in Texas and Michigan. Funeral services are scheduled for next Monday at the Cathedral Conference Center in Detroit.
