American to end Nashville-London service

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 15 -- American Airlines said Thursday it will discontinue flights between Nashville and London's Gatwick on Oct. 1, ending a service that began in May of last year. The company cited losses of millions of dollars serving the route as the reason for the move.

'We've given the route our best shot, but we just haven't been able to make money with the flights,' Gerard J. Aprey, American's senior vice president of planning, said. He said while the load factor on the route was high, there was not sufficient traffic in the first class and business cabins to keep average yields at levels the airline needed to be profitable. After Oct. 1, American said it will offer convenient connections from Nashville to London and other European destinations through international gateways at Chicago, Boston, or New York.
