TORONTO, June 6 -- The eight-man, four-woman jury in the Paul Bernardo double-murder trial watched Tuesday a final segment of graphic videotape, in which Bernardo and his ex-wife sexually assault 15-year- old Kristen French. Loud rap music plays throughout much of the 17-minute segment in which French can be seen wearing her school uniform, bound at the wrists by handcuffs and at the ankles with cord. In the segment French's kilt is lifted to reveal her buttocks, her head is leaning against the hope chest in the couples' master bedroom, where prosecutors allege Bernardo strangled French with a black electrical cord. Also visible in this segment is a knife similar to the one recovered from the home. Bernardo appears angry at French for insulting him and orders his then-wife, Karla Homolka, to perform a sexual act on the teenager with force. 'It's okay if it hurts,' he tells Homolka, and French can be heard crying out in pain. Homolka, 25, is now serving 12 years for manslaughter for her role in the killing of two Ontario teenagers, French and 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy. Bernardo is charged with first-degree murder in the two deaths. As in previous segments, Bernardo forces French to praise and appease him. She repeatedly apologizes for calling Bernardo a 'bastard' during a sexual assault. 'You are my master and I'm very sorry,' says French in the last segment where she is seen alive. 'I'm very sorry and I didn't mean to call you the things I did.
I had no right and I should be punished. 'I'm glad you're punishing me for it 'cause I had no right to do it. ..You deserve a lot better than me, master,' says French. 'You deserve all the girls at my school. 'You are so nice and so powerful, so sexy, so much in control of everything. Nobody can overpower you. Master, king of all kings, you're the best man in the whole world. You're so good at what you do. I'm surprised there's not 10,000 girls here by now waiting in line for you.' Police witness Sgt. Gary Beaulieu testified that marks could be seen on French's wrists and that Bernardo had previously hit her nine times. Two final videos were shown in open court Tuesday because they contained none of what the crown called child pornography. Following of a court ruling, the videotapes showing assaults on the victims are viewed only by the judge, jury, lawyers and Bernardo. The public is allowed only to listen to the soundtrack. The first tape, filmed during a vacation in Florida, shows Homolka performing a striptease for Bernardo, saying she just wants to 'please my man.' The second tape, which lasts an hour, shows Bernardo and Homolka having sex with a prostitute during a trip to Atlantic City in August 1992, two months after French was slain. French was kidnapped from a church parking lot April 16, 1992, on her way home from school. Her naked, battered body was recovered two weeks later beside a rural road in Burlington. Mahaffy disappeared outside her Burlington home June 15, 1991. Her dismembered remains encased in cement were recovered from Lake Gibson near St. Catharines 14 days later, the same day Bernardo and Homolka were married. For the second day in a row, the French and Mahaffy families were absent from the courtroom packed with spectators and media. Cross- examination in the videotaped evidence portion of the trial begins Wednesday.
