HOLLYWOOD, May 8 -- The plague-thriller 'Outbreak' led the European box office with $5.6 million at 1,325 theaters for the week ending May 5, Daily Variety reported Monday. 'Outbreak' has infected audiences in France, Germany, Holland, Italy and the United Kingdom, taking in $32.6 million in five weeks.
Nipping at its heels was a re-release of the Disney animated classic '101 Dalmatians,' which took second place with $5.5 million at 1,559 theaters. 'Dalmatians' has now taken in close to $47.5 million in seven weeks on the Continent, Daily Variety reported. Disney's 34-year-old animated feature could wind up topping the $67.5 million overseas record for a reissue, set two years ago by 'The Jungle Book.' 'Streetfighter,' which flopped in the United States, came in third with $4.7 million at 816 screens, most of them in France, for a total of $12.4 million in three weeks. The Western 'Legends of the Fall' ranked fourth with $4.7 million on 701 screens to reach $32.4 million in its eighth week in release. 'Dumb and Dumber,' a huge hitin the United States with $144 million, finished fifth with $3.7 million at 913 theaters, leading in Germany and the United Kingdom. Jim Carrey's unique brand of humor hasn't connected as well with audiences across the Atlantic -- 'Dumb and Dumber' has only reached $26.8 million after five weeks in Europe.
