Mutombo named NBA Defensive Player of the Year

NEW YORK, May 1 -- Dikembe Mutombo of the Denver Nuggets Monday was named the National Basketball Association Defensive Player of the Year for the 1994-95 season.

Mutombo received 45 of a possible 105 votes from a nationwide panel of writers and broadcasters. Scottie Pippen of the Chicago Bulls was second in the voting with 16 points and Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets, who won the award the last two seasons, was third with 16 points. Mutombo led the NBA in blocked shots for the second straight season with 3.91 per game, including 11 in a November game against Dallas. The Nuggets ranked 11th in points allowed with 100.5.
