Orioles 13, Twins 7

MINNEAPOLIS, April 29 -- Harold Baines homered and drove in four runs and Brady Anderson scored four times Saturday night, helping the Baltimore Orioles pound rookie LaTroy Hawkins for a 13-7 win over the Minnesota Twins. Cal Ripken Jr. drove in three runs and Rafael Palmeiro had three hits for the Orioles, who collected 15 hits off four Twins pitchers and snapped a season-opening three-game losing streak.

Scott Leius belted a three-run homer to lead the Twins. Hawkins, a 22-year-old right-hander making his major-league debut, allowed seven runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. Kevin Brown allowed five runs in 6 1/3 innings, but nevertheless was the winner in his Baltimore debut. Brown, signed as a free agent during the offseason, walked one and struck out six. Anderson led off the game with a triple and scored on an error by first baseman Kevin Maas. Palmeiro and Ripken singled before Baines unloaded his first homer of the season, making the score 4-0. Leo Gomez and Manny Alexander singled to open the second inning and Anderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kevin Bass followed with a sacrifice fly and Ripken delivered a two-out, two-run single that chased Hawkins. Leius hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning, but Andy Van Slyke's two-run single in the fourth gave Baltimore a 9-3 lead and the Orioles scored three more in the fifth. Singles by Anderson, Bass and Palmeiro loaded the bases before Brad Radke hit Ripken with a pitch to force in a run. Another error by Maas allowed two more runs to score, making it 12-3.
