SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., March 2 -- Second seed Jim Courier eliminated Renzo Furlan of Italy, 6-3, 6-4, Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the $303,000 Arizona Tennis Championships. Meanwhile, third seed Stefan Edberg of Sweden rolled to a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Germany's Michael Geserer in a second-round match.
Edberg edged Hendrick Dreekman of Germany, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, in his opening match. In other second-round action Thursday, sixth seed Bernd Karbacher of Germany fell to Brett Steven of New Zealand, 6-1, 6-4, and eighth seed Mark Woodforde of Australia led American Wade McGuire 6-4, 1-0 before McGuire retired with a back injury. Courier defeated Lionel Roux of France, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, in his opening round match and Furlan held off Brian Dunn of the United States, 6-4, 6-4. Dunn was a late replacement for Thomas Enqvist of Sweden, who won last week's U.S. Indoor title at Philadelphia but was forced to withdraw from this week's event because of shoulder problems.
