Rapper arrested for drugs

LAKE CHARLES, La., Dec. 21 -- Rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of marijuana possession after authorities trying to serve him with legal papers said they smelled pot smoke coming from his hotel room. Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, and three others were booked on the misdemeanor charges and released after posting $2,000 bail each, according to detective John Fryar with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office. Although Broadus was released by 4 p.m., his scheduled Wednesday night concert at the Lake Charles Civic Center was canceled. The three members of his backing band involved in the incident were identified by authorities as Delmar Arnaude, 21, of Los Angeles; Ricardo Emmanual Brown, 22, of Los Angeles; and Darryl Daniels, 26, of Long Beach, Calif. The arrest further compounds the 23-year-old rap star's legal troubles. Broadus's trial on murder charges is expected to begin in Los Angeles early next year. He also faces two civil lawsuits over his abrupt cancelation of his first national concert tour last fall. Sheriff's deputies were attempting to serve Broadus with one of those federal lawsuits at about 11 a.m. Wednesday when they smelled what they believed to be pot smoke coming from his hotel room at the Player's Casino in Lake Charles. Broadus initially refused to open the door for the deputies. But narcotics detectives ultimately entered the room using a hotel pass key after a drug-sniffing dog was brought in. After calling his attorney in Los Angeles, Broadus agreed to cooperate with authorities.

A search of the room turned up a small amount of marijuana and assorted pieces of drug paraphernalia. An arraignment date for Broadus and his band members has not yet been set, Fryar said. Broadus, better known to his fans as Snoop Doggy Dogg, catapulted to the top of the pop music charts last year with the release of his debut album, 'Doggystyle,' which went on to become one of this year's top- selling releases.
