Mets do tri-city deal

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 -- The New York Mets on Tuesday acquired second baseman Jesus Azuaje from Cleveland as the player to be named in a Nov. 18 trade with the Indians. In the deal last month, the Mets sent outfielder Jeromy Burnitz and pitcher Joe Roa to the Indians for pitchers Jerry DiPoto, Dave Mlicki and Paul Byrd and a player to be named. The Mets also partially completed deals made last month with the Milwaukee Brewers and the Houston Astros. The Mets sent catcher Javier Gonzalez to the Brewers as one of the two players to be named in a Nov. 30 trade for pitcher Doug Henry. New York also traded Andy Beckerman to the Astros as a player to be named in a Nov. 28 trade that sent pitcher Pete Harnisch from Houston to the Mets. Houston will receive another player if the Mets can sign Harnisch for the 1995 season or trade him to another club. The 21-year-old Azuaje hit .282 with seven homers, 57 runs batted in and 21 stolen bases in 118 games with the Indians' Columbus farm club of the Class A South Atlantic League. The 26-year-old Gonzalez was signed as a minor league free agent last season after being released by the Boston Red Sox organization. He hit . 193 in 30 games with Boston's New Britain farm club of the Class AA Eastern League and .233 with the Mets' Norfolk farm club of the Class AAA International League.

Beckerman, a 24-year-old right-hander, pitched for Binghamton of the Class AA Eastern League last season and finished third in the league in saves with 19 and second in games finished with 44. He was 3-5 with a 3. 86 earned run average in 55 relief appearances. The previous year, he was 7-1 with an 0.67 ERA pitching in Class A.
