Auburn 31, Arkansas 14

AUBURN, Ala., Oct. 29 -- Stephen Davis ran for a career-high 246 yards, including three touchdowns in the fourth quarter Saturday to help undefeated Auburn survive a scare and record its 19th straight victory, 31-14, over Arkansas. Arkansas carried a 14-10 lead into the fourth quarter before Davis scored the first of his three touchdowns 38 seconds into the period to put the Tigers ahead.

Davis, who carried 27 times, capped a methodical nine-play, 80-yard drive with his 1-yard scoring run to give the Tigers the victory. Auburn has yet to lose a game under Terry Bowden, whose hiring coincided with the start of the Tigers winning streak. Auburn improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Southeastern Conference, but is on probation and ineligible for the SEC title or a bowl game. The Tigers are unranked because United Press International does not include teams on probation in it's poll. Davis completed his outburst later in the fourth with scoring runs of 24 and 53 yards as he recorded the fifth-highest rushing total in school history. The Razorbacks (3-5, 2-4) surprised Auburn by jumping in front 8:21 into the game. Nose guard Junior Soli intercepted a pass from Patrick Nix, 10 of 18 passes for 173 yards, near the line of scrimmage and returned it 51 yards to give Arkansas the lead. The Tigers got on the board on Matt Hawkins' 33-yard field goal 44 seconds later and went in front on Nix's 44-yard touchdown pass to Frank Sanders 6:08 into the second. Sanders accounted for 128 of the passing yards on seven receptions. The Hogs went back in front with 2:02 left in the third on quarterback Barry Lunney's one-yard scoring run. Lunney completed 10 of 21 passes for 120 yards. Auburn leads the all-time series between the schools, 3-0-1.
