Nuggets sign Ellis

DENVER, Oct. 4 -- The Denver Nuggets Tuesday signed free agent guard Dale Ellis. The 34-year-old Ellis, a 10-year veteran out of Tennessee, is one of the most prolific three-point shooters in league history.

He averaged 15.2 points per game for the San Antonio Spurs last season, and shot 40 percent from three-point range. Ellis has also played for Dallas, Seattle and Milwaukee in his career. The Nuggets made room under the salary cap for Ellis by releasing veteran guard Alvin Robertson on Monday. Robertson, who earned $1.3 million last season, did not play at all for the Nuggets due to back problems after being traded from the Detroit Pistons in a midseason deal for Mark Macon and Marcus Liberty. A four-time NBA All-Star, Robertson was named the defensive player of the year in the 1985-86 season and ranks second on the all-time steals list. The 32-year-old Robinson, a first-round selection by San Antonio in the 1984 draft, is one of only four players to record a quadruple- double in a game.
