ABC sweeps weekly TV ratings again

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 -- ABC continued to lead the other three networks in news and entertainment programming for the week ending Aug. 28, the third week in a row it has dominated, according to the A.C. Nielsen Co. Eight of the top 10 spots were reruns and ABC had five of the top shows, CBS three and NBC two. ABC had a 9.7-18 rating for the week and dominated Monday, Wednesday and Friday and tied with CBS on Tuesday. CBS had 9.5-17 for the week, ahead of NBC's 8.9-16. NBC dominated Thursday while Fox, which had 6.1-11 with 16 hours of prime time programming compared to 22 hours for the major networks, took Saturday away from CBS. For the second week in a row, the rerun of 'Home Improvement' got the most attention, with a 17.6-29 rating. 'Grace Under Fire' (17.2- 28), 'Frasier' (15.0-25), 'Seinfeld' (14.9-25), all reruns, maintained the position they held the week before. 'Roseanne' (14.5-24) fell behind '60 Minutes' (14.5-29) to finish sixth. 'Ellen,' Monday night football, 'Murder She Wrote,' and 'Murphy Brown' finished the list. In the evening news category ABC led with 8.9-19, followed by CBS with 8.19-19 and NBC with 7.7-17. From Sept. 20, 1993, ABC has earned a 10.2-21, ahead of NBC (9.1-18) and CBS (9.0-18). Each ratings point represents about 942,000 households. A share is the percentage of television sets in use that are tuned into a particular show or network.
