NEW YORK, July 26 -- ABC reclaimed the No. 1 network title last week after being displaced for two consecutive weeks by CBS, claiming five spots on the top 10 programs list, dominating programming on three nights, and taking honors for its evening news coverage. The A.C. Nielsen Co.'s ratings for the week ending Aug. 14 found the usual sitcoms in their usual places on the top 10 list, all in summer rerun. Only ABC's '20/20' was a new show and claimed 9th place on the list. ABC's 'Home Improvement' was back in its usual No. 1 spot, up from third place the previous week, followed by 'Grace Under Fire,' 'Seinfeld,' 'Frasier,' '60 Minutes,' also in rerun, and 'Roseanne. Completing the list was 'Murder, She Wrote, 'Ellen,' '20/20'and 'Wings.' ABC got a 9.5 rating for the week and an 18 percent share of the viewing audience, compared to 8.8-16 the previous week when it was in second place. CBS slipped from 9.7-18 to 9.2-17 to take second place and NBC trailed with 8.6-16. Fox won a 5.9 rating and 11 share with 16 hours of prime time programming, compared to the other networks' 22 hours. ABC claimed Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, CBS Monday and Sunday and NBC Thursday and Saturday. Saturday is usually in CBS's bailiwick. Movies got good ratings, with ABC's 'Ghostbusters II' on Sunday taking 11th place, CBS's 'I Can Make You Love Me' on Tuesday in 12th place, and CBS's 'The Secret' on Sunday in 15th.
ABC was out in front, as usual, for its evening news coverage, registering 8.8-20. NBC was second with 7.9-17 and CBS third with 7.5- 16. Each ratings point represents about 942,000 households. A share is the percentage of TV sets in use that are tuned into a particular show or network. ------
