Five hanged in Singapore

SINGAPORE, Juls 30 -- The Straits Times reported Saturday that five men were hanged in Changi Prison a day earlier. Two of the condemned prisoners were convicted of drug trafficking and the other three of murder.

Chief Hyicenth C. Ihejirika, 59, a Nigerian, was arrested for trafficking six pounds (2.7 kg) of heroin on June 6, 1991. He was convicted May last year and sentenced to death. Samsuri Mohamed Yus, 42, a taxi driver, was arrested for trafficking 6.3 pounds (2.9 kg) of cannabis. He was also convicted in May 1993 and sentenced to death. Ibrahim Masod, 50, and Liow Han Heng, 44, were convicted of murdering Phang Tee Wah, 56, after kidnapping him in April 1989. Both men were convicted of murder and sentenced to death. However, Liow died in prison last August. Lee Teck Sand, 25, was convicted of stabbing to death a Singapore Polytechnic lecturer, Tan Chin Liong, 45, in October 1992. Goh Hong Choon, 25, was convicted of strangling a 10-year-old Kuan Bee Hong to death in April 1991.
