Borden sells Bama Foods

COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 11 -- Borden Inc. announced Monday the sale of its Bama Foods business, headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., to Welch's Inc., in Concord, Mass. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Bama Foods operates a Birmingham facility that processes jams, jellies, preserves, mayonnaise and peanut butter under the Bama brand name, which are sold in the South, and Laura Scudder's Old Fashioned All Natural Peanut Butter, which is sold in parts of the West and Southwest. Total annual sales are approximately $70 million. The transaction also includes a distribution center in Birmingham. Bama Foods is among the businesses to be sold under the divestment portion of Borden's restructuring program announced in January. In addition to Bama, Borden has completed the sales of its food-service, seafood, Bennett's sauces and Japan ice cream businesses. The businesses to be divested make up about 18 percent, or $1.2 billion, of Borden's 1993 total revenues. Borden Inc. is a worldwide producer of packaged foods, non-food consumer products, and packaging and industrial products.
