MTV movie award winners announced

CULVER CITY, Calif. June 5 -- 'Menace II Society' won top honors at the MTV Movie Awards, while Tom Hanks and Janet Jackson earned kudos for best performances.

The star-studded awards show held at Sony Studios Saturday night was hosted by actor/singer Will Smith and also featured award presentations by actors such as Robin Williams, Tom Arnold and Emilio Estevez and supermodel Elle Macpherson.

Musical guest performers in the show to be broadcast Thursday included Bon Jovi, Toni Braxton and John Mellencamp.

Janet Jackson picked up a second award for the Most Desirable Female category for her role in Columbia's 'Poetic Justice.' The Most Desirable Male award went to William Baldwin for his performance in 'Sliver.'

Alicia Silverstone picked up two awards, Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Villain, both for part in Warner Bros.' 'The Crush.'

The Best On-Screen Duo award went to Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones for their portrayals in Warner Bros.' 'The Fugitive.' Robin Williams won best comedic performance for his role as a nanny in 20th Century Fox's 'Mrs. Doubtfire.'

Michael Jackson's 'Will You Be There' from Warner Bros.' 'Free Willy' earned the Best Song award. And Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore earned an award for Best Kiss in Paramount's 'Indecent Proposal.'

Winners of the MTV Movie Awards were selected by viewers in the United States and Eurpoe who called in on 1-800 numbers to pick their favorites. There was also a mail-in ballot published in Entertainment Weekly magazine.
