Jackie Onassis out of NY hospital

NEW YORK, May 18 -- Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was discharged Wednesday from a Manhattan hospital, just two days after being admitted for treatment of 'serious complications' in her ongoing bout with cancer of the lymph nodes.

'In accordance with the patient's clearly expressed wishes and with the concurrence of her physicians, she has been discharged home,' New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center said in a statement Wednesday evening.

Hospital spokeswoman Myrna Manners said she could not comment beyond what was in the statement, or say whether Onassis' doctors had cautioned against her going home.

The hospital said the former first lady was admitted Monday 'as a result of serious complications of her malignant lymphoma.

'While in the hospital, she received further diagnostic evaluation and treatment,' the statement said.

A spokeswoman for Onassis, the widow of slain president John F. Kennedy and Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, could not be reached for immediate comment.

But on Tuesday, spokeswoman Nancy Tuckerman said the former first lady, who is a book editor at Doubleday, was in excellent spirits and doing fine.

Onassis, 64, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in January. Last month, she suffered a bleeding ulcer, believed to be linked to chemotherapy, a harsh treatment that involves injecting cancer- inhibiting chemicals into the bloodstream.

On April 15, she underwent emergency surgery and a hospital stay that coincided with that of late President Richard Nixon.

Her son John Kennedy Jr., daughter Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and longtime companion Maurice Tempelsman have been frequent bedside visitors.NEWLN: (Written by Tracy Connor in New York)
