NEW YORK, May 17 -- The National Basketball Association Tuesday fined Phoenix Suns guard Danny Ainge $5,000 for deliberately hitting Houston Rockets guard Mario Elie in the face with the ball in the closing seconds of Friday's playoff game between the teams.
The fine was levied by NBA Vice President of Operations Rod Thorn.

After a Houston basket, Ainge fired the ball at Elie's face with 6.9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the Rockets' 118-102 win at Phoenix in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals.
