The Browns get a new quarterbacks coach

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns announced Friday the hiring of Rod Dowhower as the team's quarterbacks' coach.

Dowhower, formerly offensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins, helped the Redskins reach a Super Bowl championship and league-high 485 points in 1991.

He lost his job when Washington hired Norv Turner as their new head coach this week.

'I have known Rod a long time,' said Browns head coach Bill Belichick. 'I think it's a big plus that he comes to us from Washington, a team that won the Super Bowl in '91. Rod's had so much valuable experience in the league, and we are excited about him coming in and working with Vinny (Testaverde).'

Dowhower, 50, coached with some of the league's most impressive coaches, including Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh and Don Coryell.

He started his NFL coaching career in 1973 as an assistant under Coryell in St. Louis. He later worked in Denver and Atlanta, coaching with Browns' offensive coordinator Steve Crosby for three years. He was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 1985-86.

Dowhower spent 13 years on the collegiate level, including one year as head coach at Stanford. He also worked at San Diego State, UCLA, Boise State and Stanford.
