Four killed, 48 injured in blast on Christmas Day

MANILA -- Four people were killed and 48 others were seriously injured when an unidentified man lobbed a grenade inside a marketplace on Christmas Day, a police official said Sunday.

Police regional director, senior superintendent Roberto Lastimosa said the man threw a fragmentation grenade at a group of people shopping inside the marketplace in Bonifacio town in Misamis Occidental, 450 miles (720 kms) south of Manila.

Four people were dead at the scene, while 48 others were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police said they have no motive or suspects in the bombing.

Misamis Occidental is known to be a hotbed of communist New People's Army guerillas, as well as a base of bandit groups which engage in kidnapping for ransom.
