DURHAM, N.C. -- Former Rice Coach Fred Goldsmith, was named the head football coach at Duke University at a Thursday afternoon news conference.
Goldsmith replaces Barry Wilson, who stepped down after the 1993 season. The Blue Devils finished 3-8 in 1993 and 12-29-1 in four seasons under Wilson.
Goldsmith guided Rice to consecutive 6-5 records the past two years. They were the Owls first winning seasons since 1963. He compiled a 23- 33-1 record at Rice.
